Dead Key Fob Battery

Modern key fobs let us unlock doors, trunks and tailgates easily without the need for a key in the car. Some key fobs have a built-in key that can be used to start cars. However, these fobs depend on a tiny battery that is the power source for their remote functions. If the battery is dead, the key fob cannot send a signal to trigger the vehicle. There are a variety of ways you can fix a dead key fob and get your car running again.

First, you must determine if the key fob is actually dead. If it appears to be dead, you will have to replace the batteries. You can do this yourself by taking the key fob off its clip or using a small flat-head screwdriver to remove it. Be careful not to put too much pressure on the fob or you could cause damage to the fob. It is also important to ensure that you're using a correct kind of battery. Some models may require a different battery. If you aren't sure what kind of battery your vehicle requires the most common place to look is the details in the owner's manual, or visit an Interstate All Battery Center to get a professional to assist you.

It is possible to revive the key fob that's dead by moving closer to the car. Since most key fobs are RFID (radio-frequency identification) they only work at a short distance and need to be near enough to allow the ignition system to recognize the signal. You can unlock your vehicle or even start it if you move few inches closer.

Many car manufacturers have backup systems that is activated when the battery of the key fob is low. Ford, for example has a slot which is devoted to the key fob. When inserted correctly, the key fob will start the engine of the car. Refer to the owner's manual for details on how to locate this slot and how to insert the key fob. If you are unable start your car using this method, be sure to contact roadside assistance for assistance.

The key fob's internal chip is what communicates with your car's immobilizer system in order to start the engine. The chip could be damaged or there could be programming errors. A malfunctioning transponder could be caused by physical damage to the key shell, or wear and tear on the contact pads.

Often when a key fob begins to struggle with the vehicle's immobilizer system and you notice specific warning indicators on the dashboard. These may include errors, flashing lights or the key is not locking the vehicle. If you see these warnings, contact your local locksmith immediately for key fob replacement or repair.

It is very easy to damage the ring of your keys by applying too much pressure on it, particularly when carrying multiple keys. This can cause the fob to split in half. This is one of the main causes of broken car key. You can apply super glue on both sides of the crack and gently press them together to repair the issue. It is crucial to make use of a gel-type glue that dries slowly to prevent drips or runniness.

If this method does not work, you should contact a professional locksmith right away to avoid further damage to your vehicle. A locksmith with the right qualifications can replace or repair your fob quickly and will ensure that the ignition as well as door locks are not damaged in the process.

Broken Key Loop

One of my MK5 keysfobs fell off the little key ring on the top, which is where it connects to the keyfob. It appears to be made of extremely soft plastic or metal. I've drilled a hole, and then wet-sanded it to make it stronger but I'm guessing the problem isn't helped by that.

I've also tried wrapping the broken part of the ring with clear tape, but it does not seem to do any good. It's a shame, because I rely on the small split ring to keep my keys in place.

If the case of the key fob is broken, you can often open it up and replace the battery if the battery isn't already dead. There are kits online to help, but they usually only offer a temporary fix - it is more efficient to take it to a mechanic who will swap out the battery and reprogram the key fob. Alternately, you may be able to find a replacement case at a home improvement store or locksmith. They're not likely to cost as much as an entirely new key fob.
